Muswell Hill Synagogue – Youth Director
Location: Muswell Hill, North London
Salary: £20 per hour
Hours:

  • Approx. 7 hours per week during term-time
  • Wednesdays 6:15–8:15pm, plus one Shabbat morning per month
  • Additional hours for Jewish festivals (Chaggim)

Reports to: Rebbetzin

Muswell Hill Synagogue is a vibrant, warm and welcoming community where Jewish learning, prayer and belonging are at the heart of everything we do. Our youth are a treasured part of our community, and we are seeking a dedicated Youth Director to inspire, guide and nurture them.


The Role
Shabbat & Festivals

  • Lead and innovate monthly Shabbat services for KS1 & KS2
  • Plan and deliver creative youth activities around Shabbat and Chaggim

Weekly Youth Engagement

  • Run our weekly Wednesday night Youth Club (Years 7–8)
  • Coordinate Tribe’s Learn 2 Lead programme (Years 9–10)
  • Work with the Rabbinic Team and Events Director to plan dynamic youth events throughout the year

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Recruit, supervise and schedule a team of youth leaders (madrichim)
  • Act as a mentor and role model for young people

Communication & Community

  • Build warm relationships with youth and parents
  • Communicate regularly via WhatsApp, email, social media and in person
  • Represent the Youth Programme to the Synagogue Council and wider community
  • Liaise with Tribe and bring back best practice from trainings and events

General Responsibilities

  • Be an ambassador for the United Synagogue and uphold its policies
  • Work collaboratively across the organisation
  • Maintain confidentiality and safeguard the welfare of children and families
  • Undertake training and continuous professional development

Person Specification
Essential:

  • Strong understanding of Modern Orthodox Judaism
  • Experience engaging young people in youth/community/educational settings
  • Confidence leading youth-focused services and Jewish learning
  • Excellent organisational and event-planning skills
  • Warm, approachable, and able to build rapport with youth and parents
  • Good communication skills, including social media
  • Able to walk to shul or accept home hospitality on Shabbat and Chaggim

Desirable:

  • Previous youth leadership experience within a shul or youth organisation
  • Experience mentoring young volunteers
